The St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit plays a critical role in ensuring public safety across the vast waterways of St. Lawrence County, NY—home to some of the most expansive and heavily trafficked boating areas in the region. With the mighty St. Lawrence River as its centerpiece, along with countless lakes, rivers, and tributaries, our Marine Unit is tasked with enforcing laws, conducting search and rescue operations, and promoting safe boating practices.

Patrol & Enforcement

Our Deputies and patrol boats actively monitor waterways to:

  • Enforce NY State navigation laws (speed limits, reckless operation, DWI on the water)

  • Conduct safety inspections (life jackets, registration, required equipment)

  • Respond to emergencies (boating accidents, distress calls, missing persons)

  • Assist other agencies in border security & smuggling interdiction (due to proximity to Canada)

  • Patrol special events (fishing tournaments, regattas, holiday boating traffic)

St. Lawrence County’s Waterways

St. Lawrence County is defined by its 1,000+ miles of shoreline along:

  • The St. Lawrence River (primary jurisdiction, international border)

  • Black Lake (one of NY’s largest inland lakes)

  • Grasse River, Raquette River, Oswegatchie River (major tributaries)

  • Numerous smaller lakes & ponds (Fine, Cranberry, Star Lakes, etc.)

With such a vast and diverse waterway system, our Marine Unit is essential for protecting lives, property, and the environment year-round—especially during peak boating season (May-October).

Safety & Education

We also prioritize boater education, offering:

  • Free vessel safety checks

  • BUI (Boating Under the Influence) awareness campaigns

  • Youth & adult boating courses

For emergencies on the water, dial 911 or marine radio Channel 16.
