Snowmobile Patrol Unit
The St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office Snowmobile Patrol Unit ensures safe and lawful snowmobiling across the county’s expansive trail network. With over 500 miles of groomed trails winding through forests, farmland, and frozen waterways, our deputies patrol these routes to protect riders, assist stranded travelers, and preserve the North Country’s cherished winter traditions.
Patrol Areas & Trail System
Our unit focuses enforcement and safety efforts across three key zones of the St. Lawrence County Trail System:
-
Northern Corridors
Massena to Brasher - Monitoring high-speed straightaways and river crossings -
Central Connectors
Potsdam to Star Lake - Patrolling popular restaurant/rest stop junctions -
Southern Wilderness Routes
Clare to Cranberry Lake - Covering remote backcountry sections with limited access
Our unit focuses on high-traffic areas, safety checkpoints, and remote zones where emergencies may require rapid response.
Key Responsibilities
-
Trail Enforcement: Monitoring speed limits, registration compliance, and alcohol use.
-
Search & Rescue: Locating lost or injured riders in extreme winter conditions.
-
Public Education: Promoting safe riding practices at trailheads and local clubs.
-
Emergency Support: Partnering with NYS Parks, DEC, and volunteer groomers to maintain trail safety.
Why Snowmobile Patrol Matters Here
St. Lawrence County’s economy and culture thrive on winter recreation. Our Snowmobile Unit safeguards riders navigating challenges like:
-
Unpredictable ice conditions on rivers and lakes.
-
Isolated stretches with limited cell service.
-
After-dark hazards on unlit trails.
By combining proactive patrols with community outreach, we keep the trails enjoyable for families, tourists, and lifelong riders alike.
